We all know how bad California’s pollution problem is and we know that there are things that each and every one of us can do to make it better. Did you know that having your car maintained properly can actually help fight pollution? That is why California requires that cars be smog tested on a biennial basis.
About 15 years ago, the California smog check program received some major updates to the way the test was being performed. These updates included the use of a dynamometer, or dyno, to actually simulate real world driving. This update made the tests more accurate because we could see how the car performed “on the road” without actually being on the road. This new test created a lot of smog check failures especially in older model cars that had a less efficient emission control system. The test data that the state and federal governments received also showed that newer cars with more updated on-board diagnostic systems had an easier time passing these tests.
Many years of test and studies performed on the resulting data has necessitated a new change to the California Smog Check Program. Starting on January 1st, 2013, most vehicles made in 1999 or older will have to undergo more rigorous testing than before. These tests will also need to be performed by a STAR smog check certified shop such as GIC Car Clinic. We have been selected the State of California to inspect these older cars. Only stations that the state has deemed qualified are able to provide accurate and in-depth inspections on these cars. GIC Car Clinic in San Jose, California is honored to have been chosen and will provide you with a thorough smog check enabling you to pass follow-up inspections and help keep our environment cleaner and less polluted.
