How Does My Car’s Thermostat Work?

The coolant then travels back into the engine to provide cooling and reduce engine temperatures keeping them at a safe level.
When the wax element cools down, it contracts and the thermostat will begin to close partially. This open and shut cycling is what helps keep the engine at a constant temperature and you driving down the road.
